{"id":254300,"date":"2024-11-22T03:19:11","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T03:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/22\/smallholder-farmers-to-make-use-of-ghana-commodity-exchange\/"},"modified":"2024-11-22T03:19:11","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T03:19:11","slug":"smallholder-farmers-to-make-use-of-ghana-commodity-exchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/22\/smallholder-farmers-to-make-use-of-ghana-commodity-exchange\/","title":{"rendered":"Smallholder farmers to make use of Ghana Commodity Exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                       \n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A retired Director of the Department of Agriculture has advised smallholder farmers, especially those who cultivate cereal crops, to patronise the services of the Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) to maximise their income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Victor Yao-Dablu, the stress of dealing with the open market has not been helpful to smallholder farmers over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the GCX, through the warehouse receipt system, is better placed to help farmers avoid post-harvest losses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This system also offers better pricing to make the smallholder farmers competitive in the farming business since GCX is a regulated national and regional market that links buyers and sellers of agricultural and non-agricultural products,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032643016 lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/maize-sellers.jpg\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-eio-rwidth=\"800\" data-eio-rheight=\"450\" src-webp=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/maize-sellers.jpg.webp\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/maize-sellers.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032643016\" data-eio=\"l\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Yao-Dablu urged farmers to recognise that the days when they were helplessly shortchanged by commodity middlemen and open-market buyers are over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the GCX has come in handy to salvage the post-harvest predicaments of farmers and improved harvesting and post-harvest management practices aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He encouraged smallholder farmers to acquire the best farming practices and enhance their skills development to make them more competitive and gain access to the GCX system while improving food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Agriculture Extension Officers (AEOs) are always available, so engage them to train you in practices such as harvesting matured farm produce at the right time, storage techniques and operating electronic weighing machines,&#8221; Mr Yao-Dablu added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032643017 lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Maize.jpg\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-eio-rwidth=\"800\" data-eio-rheight=\"450\" src-webp=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Maize.jpg.webp\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Maize.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032643017\" data-eio=\"l\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed the need for farmers to know the appropriate practicalities in applying weedicides and fertilisers on improved crop varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFarmers must be meticulous with the use of fertilisers and weedicides because the use of wrong agrochemical and misapplication on food crops threatens human health and the environment,&#8221;
