{"id":253645,"date":"2024-11-20T22:24:52","date_gmt":"2024-11-20T22:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/20\/dismantling-free-shs-not-an-option\/"},"modified":"2024-11-20T22:24:52","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T22:24:52","slug":"dismantling-free-shs-not-an-option","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/20\/dismantling-free-shs-not-an-option\/","title":{"rendered":"Dismantling Free SHS not an option"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Patrick Awuah Jnr, the President and Founder of Ashesi University, has expressed strong opposition to the potential cancellation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.<\/p>\n<p>John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to abolish the double-track system of the Free SHS and review the policy while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to enhance and maintain the programme if elected president.<\/p>\n<p>During a discussion with Bernard Avle on <em><strong>The Point of View on Channel One TV<\/strong><\/em>, Mr. Awuah Jnr emphasized the importance of preserving the Free SHS initiative.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the discontinuation of the programme should not be considered while students are still actively benefiting from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notion that you should educate everybody through secondary education is correct. That is what is in our constitution education should be progressively free through secondary education. There\u2019s a very strong correlation between the GDP of countries and the percentage of people who got into secondary education, very high correlation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is getting a good secondary education. Your GDP growth is going to be stronger than if you don\u2019t have that. The way the conversation has happened in Ghana and the decisions have been made, In my view, there has not been enough patience as a sort of sharing ideas and trying to come up with a consensus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the debate that was happening say 10 years ago about whether we should do it now or not, that\u2019s a valid debate. As you probably know, at the time of the debate you should take a gradual approach. Say there\u2019s a plan of what we gonna do four years from now, six years from now and you live by the constitution and say progressively free and you do a ten-year plan and you gonna get there, sort of my style and it happened at once.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cAnd it happens all at once, some positives have come out of that and some difficulties have come out of that. Now, we are ten years in and I think that the conversation that we were having ten years ago is not the conversation we should be having today. Today, we have kids in the classrooms, you cannot tomorrow dismantle Free SHS.
