{"id":251019,"date":"2024-11-14T18:25:04","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T18:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/14\/22000-bags-of-expired-repackaged-rice-distributed-across-shss\/"},"modified":"2024-11-14T18:25:04","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T18:25:04","slug":"22000-bags-of-expired-repackaged-rice-distributed-across-shss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/14\/22000-bags-of-expired-repackaged-rice-distributed-across-shss\/","title":{"rendered":"22,000 bags of expired, repackaged rice distributed across SHSs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, claims 22,000 bags of expired and repackaged rice were distributed to Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country in February this year.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ablakwa, in an interview on Joy FM\u2019s Midday News on Thursday, 14th November, the National Food Buffer Stock Company conspired with a company known as Lamens Investments Africa Limited to carry out the disservice.<\/p>\n<p>He alleged that the Buffer Stock storage facility in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region, was used to repackage expired rice brought from India, which expired in December 2023 but was repackaged into locally made sacks, \u201cwith inscription \u2018ECOWAS\u2019, \u2018Made in Ghana rice\u2019, but without an expiry date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Food Buffer Stock Company clearly conspired with a company known as Lamens Investments Africa Limited. They used the Buffer Stock storage facility in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region, to repackage expired rice. This company brought in rice from India, the brand \u2018Moshosho rice,\u2019 which expired in December 2023. Upon realising the rice had expired, they conspired with the Buffer Stock company to use their premises for re-bagging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ablakwa further disclosed that the Ashanti Regional Police Command and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the region, upon receiving a tip-off, intercepted the food for investigation but it was later released for onward distribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you believe that, before the test results arrived from the FDA in Accra on 6th February, an instruction came from above that the expired, contaminated rice should be distributed to the schools? So, as we speak, all 22,000 bags of rice that the police sought to confiscate have been sent to the schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ablakwa indicated that even after the case was exposed, an investigation was launched but was later abandoned when the said company offered to pay compensation of GH\u20b5100,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere ought to be prosecution. The company has admitted to their wrongdoing and agreed to pay a fine of GH\u20b5100,000 after jeopardising the health of thousands of Ghanaian students.
