{"id":249870,"date":"2024-11-12T22:01:54","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T22:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/12\/minority-wont-return-to-parliament-until-after-december-polls-nii-lante-vanderpuye\/"},"modified":"2024-11-12T22:01:54","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T22:01:54","slug":"minority-wont-return-to-parliament-until-after-december-polls-nii-lante-vanderpuye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/12\/minority-wont-return-to-parliament-until-after-december-polls-nii-lante-vanderpuye\/","title":{"rendered":"Minority won\u2019t return to Parliament until after December polls \u2013 Nii Lante Vanderpuye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, has announced that the minority caucus will not return to Parliament until after the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n<p>This decision follows the majority caucus\u2019 move to trigger a recall of Parliament in the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s recent ruling overturning Speaker Alban Bagbin\u2019s declaration of four seats as vacant.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled against Speaker Bagbin\u2019s decision, siding with a challenge from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute centred on Bagbin\u2019s interpretation of Article 97(1)(g) of the Ghanaian Constitution as justification for declaring the seats vacant. Afenyo-Markin argued that the Speaker had exceeded his authority by bypassing judicial review and blocking the possibility of by-elections in the affected constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Supreme Court had issued an interim injunction to halt the Speaker\u2019s ruling, which Bagbin contested, arguing that parliamentary decisions are beyond judicial intervention. However, the court ultimately ruled against the Speaker\u2019s declaration.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <em><strong>Channel One TV,<\/strong><\/em> Vanderpuye emphasized that the NPP caucus could not justify what he called \u201cunnecessary spending\u201d of taxpayer money.<\/p>\n<p>He affirmed that the NDC minority caucus would focus on election preparations and resume parliamentary duties only after the December polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey should not waste the taxpayers\u2019 money by asking us to come to Parliament in the next three weeks. We are not coming. We are concerned about elections, and we shall only come to Parliament after the elections. That should be at the back of their minds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He further stressed \u201cWe want them to understand one fact that as far as we are concerned, issues about minority or majority are determined by the numbers in the house, so when we resume, the numbers will tell whether we are the majority, or they are the majority. This is not about the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026It is not for the NPP or the Supreme Court to define for us who are majority or minority in Ghana\u2019s Parliament. We have our own procedures for determining who is a majority or who is a minority.
