{"id":249281,"date":"2024-11-12T02:57:25","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T02:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/12\/dna-testing-site-23andme-to-lay-off-40-of-its-workers\/"},"modified":"2024-11-12T02:57:25","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T02:57:25","slug":"dna-testing-site-23andme-to-lay-off-40-of-its-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/12\/dna-testing-site-23andme-to-lay-off-40-of-its-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"DNA-testing site 23andMe to lay off 40% of its workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                       \n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0struggling genetic testing company 23andMe\u00a0says it will cut 40% of its workforce, or 200 jobs, as it fights for survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The once-popular DNA-testing site will also halt work on therapies it was developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the company said hackers had managed to\u00a0gain access\u00a0to the personal information of millions of its users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">23andMe&#8217;s share price has fallen by more than 70% this year, as its co-founder and chief executive Anne Wojcicki tries to turn the business around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company said it expects to incur one-off costs of $12m (\u00a39.3m), including severance pay, for the plan that will result in savings of $35m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are taking these difficult but necessary actions as we restructure 23andMe and focus on the long-term success of our core consumer business and research partnerships,&#8221; Ms Wojcicki said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also said it is considering what to do with the therapies it had in development, including licensing or selling them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">23andMe is a giant of the growing ancestor-tracing industry. It offers genetic testing from DNA, with ancestry breakdown and personalised health insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December last year, 23andMe confirmed that hackers had accessed details of about 6.9 million of its users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases this included family trees, birth years and geographic locations, the company said.
