{"id":248814,"date":"2024-11-11T10:12:19","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T10:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/11\/china-chip-index-nears-3-year-high-as-tsmc-order-fuels-self-reliance-bets\/"},"modified":"2024-11-11T10:12:19","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T10:12:19","slug":"china-chip-index-nears-3-year-high-as-tsmc-order-fuels-self-reliance-bets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/11\/china-chip-index-nears-3-year-high-as-tsmc-order-fuels-self-reliance-bets\/","title":{"rendered":"China chip index nears 3-year high as TSMC order fuels self-reliance bets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>China\u2019s semiconductor index leapt close to a three-year high on Monday on bets a U.S. order halting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co\u2019s\u00a0(2330.TW),\u00a0shipments of advanced chips to Chinese customers could accelerate Beijing\u2019s self-reliance efforts.<\/p>\n<p>TSMC will from Monday\u00a0suspend shipments\u00a0of certain sophisticated chips to some Chinese clients after receiving a letter from the U.S. Department of Commerce imposing export restrictions on those products, Reuters reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said that while the move might lead to some short-term pain for Chinese firms involved in designing chips for artificial intelligence accelerators and graphics processing units, it could benefit the domestic chipmaking sector as companies would have few alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>The CSI Semiconductor Index\u00a0(.CSI931865),\u00a0jumped more than 6% during trading on Monday to the highest since Dec. 20, 2021, while the CSI Integrated Circuits Index\u00a0(.CSI932087), \u00a0rose 5%. Shares in SMIC\u00a0(0981.HK), opens new tab, China\u2019s largest foundry and the country\u2019s main alternative to TSMC, rose more than 4%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the medium and long term it will force the reorganization of the supply chain, increase the demand for domestic advanced process production capacity, and promote technological breakthroughs in upstream semiconductor equipment and materials,\u201d Chinese brokerage Cinda Securities said in a note published on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Several Chinese technology firms and chip designers have in recent years sought to design their own advanced processors after the U.S. sanctioned Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) and barred the likes of Nvidia\u00a0(NVDA.O),\u00a0and AMD\u00a0(AMD.O),\u00a0from selling their most sophisticated chips to China.<\/p>\n<p>Many rely on Taiwan-based TSMC, the world\u2019s leading contract chipmaker, for production. In the third quarter, 11% of TSMC\u2019s revenue came from China, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. imposed export restrictions on TSMC chips of 7 nanometre or more advanced designs, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>The only foundry in China capable of producing chips at the 7 nm process node is SMIC, which is known for helping Huawei produce chips used in its latest smartphones, including the Mate 60 and Pura 70.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said SMIC has been making such advanced chips using equipment supplied by companies like the Netherlands\u2019 ASML\u00a0(ASML.AS),\u00a0and U.S.-based Applied Materials\u00a0(AMAT.O), which it managed to stockpile before U.S. sanctions took effect.<\/p>\n<p>However, SMIC has faced difficulties in ramping up production due to U.S. export controls barring it from purchasing equipment necessary for advanced chip manufacturing, while domestic alternatives are not yet ready for the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters reported in February that due to\u00a0manufacturing constraints, SMIC has had to prioritise producing AI chips for Huawei over smartphone chips, as the former is seen as more strategically important.<\/p>\n<p>Source: www.reuters.com<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s semiconductor index leapt close to a three-year high on Monday on bets a U.S. order halting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co\u2019s\u00a0(2330.TW),\u00a0shipments of advanced chips to Chinese customers could accelerate Beijing\u2019s self-reliance efforts.
