However, Agya Koo was determined to change this narrative and establish a vibrant market for local productions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack then, Nigerian movies were everywhere,\u201d he shared. \u201cThey had a hold on our screens that almost pushed our own Ghallywood and Kumawood to the side. I knew we had to do something, or we\u2019d lose our voice in our own country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His rise in the Ghanaian film industry came at a time when audiences were beginning to lose touch with homegrown stories. Agya Koo\u2019s infectious humour and authentic portrayal of Ghanaian life quickly reignited a spark, drawing viewers back to Kumawood movies.<\/p>\n<p>The actor didn\u2019t hesitate to express the backlash he faced from Nollywood\u2019s stakeholders. \u201cI remember they\u2019d reach out, asking, \u2018Who is this, Agya Koo? What is he doing that\u2019s making Ghanaians watch only their movies now?\u2019\u201d he recounted with a chuckle. \u201cThe Nigerian filmmakers were curious\u2014and, I\u2019d say, a little concerned\u2014that their dominance was being challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite facing tempting offers to join Nigeria\u2019s thriving film scene, Agya Koo declined, choosing instead to remain loyal to Kumawood. \u201cThey offered me money to go to Nigeria to perform in their movies. I knew that could be big for me personally, but I couldn\u2019t do it,\u201d he stated. \u201cMy goal was to help build Ghanaian cinema, not just my career.<\/p>\n<p>Agya Koo also shared a memorable moment when he was introduced to Nigerian comedian and actor Mr. Ibu, one of Nollywood\u2019s own icons. \u201cThere was talk of forming a partnership between our film industries\u2014something that could help both sides. I met with Mr. Ibu, and he was a great guy, but I knew I had to be strategic. I decided to wait on that collaboration,\u201d he explained, emphasizing his commitment to elevating Ghanaian cinema first.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, his impact became undeniable, helping carve out a strong identity for the Kumawood industry.
