{"id":247759,"date":"2024-11-08T06:35:12","date_gmt":"2024-11-08T06:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/08\/5-ndc-mps-introduce-private-members-bill-to-repeal-betting-tax\/"},"modified":"2024-11-08T06:35:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T06:35:12","slug":"5-ndc-mps-introduce-private-members-bill-to-repeal-betting-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/08\/5-ndc-mps-introduce-private-members-bill-to-repeal-betting-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"5 NDC MPs introduce private member\u2019s bill to repeal betting tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"-webkit-user-select: none; -webkit-touch-callout: none; -moz-user-select: none; -ms-user-select: none; user-select: none;\">\n<p id=\"article-123\">Five Members of Parliament (MP) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have introduced a private members bill to repel the betting tax.<\/p>\n<p>They are: Madina MP Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu ESQ, Ajumako Bisease MP Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Bolgatanga Central MP Isaac Adongo, Ayensuano MP Teddy Safori Addi, and Tamale North MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhyini.<\/p>\n<p>They formally presented their proposal to the Clerk to Parliament on Thursday, November 7, 2024, to amend the income tax (amendment) act, 2023 (ACT 1094) to repeal the withholding tax rate on winnings from lottery, and provide for related matters.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC MPs cited several studies to argue the youth were hugely \u201cunemployed and discouraged\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, despite imposition of the tax, a recent Afrobarometer survey published by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) reveal that unemployment (41%) is the most frequently cited problem that Ghanaians want the government to address. Again, 7 in 10 Ghanaians revealed that they or someone in their household went without a cash income at least once during the previous year, with 81 per cent of Ghanaians rating government\u2019s economic performance as overwhelmingly negative,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, in view of the above, and considering the impact on the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), and the related exacerbation of the twin challenges of unemployment and economic hardships, as well as the seeming lack of adequate safety measures to cushion vulnerable Ghanaians against daily pressing needs; there is, therefore, an urgent need to introduce programmes, including tax policies and measures that seek to rescue Ghanaians in light of the harsh economic realities, reduce the cost of living, promote savings and investments, and achieve economic stability, and sustainable growth, hence this bill,\u201d they concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five Members of Parliament (MP) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have introduced a private members bill to repel the betting tax.
