{"id":245528,"date":"2024-11-04T18:24:38","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T18:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/04\/ndf-engages-mineral-extraction-communities-in-advocacy-and-litigation-resolution\/"},"modified":"2024-11-04T18:24:38","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T18:24:38","slug":"ndf-engages-mineral-extraction-communities-in-advocacy-and-litigation-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/04\/ndf-engages-mineral-extraction-communities-in-advocacy-and-litigation-resolution\/","title":{"rendered":"NDF engages mineral extraction communities in advocacy and litigation resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                       \n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal practitioner and policy consultant, Dr. Jamal Tonzua, has criticized the government\u2019s reliance on military intervention to fight illegal mining as a \u201clazy approach\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argues there have been instances where the military has compromised its reputation by offering protection to illegal miners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Tonzua says the government has failed to properly enforce existing mining laws, leading to a crisis that has taken a national security dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the latest fight against illegal mining, President Akufo-Addo directed the revocation of the legislative instrument allowing mining in forest reserves, as well as the deployment of soldiers and the setting up of 14 courts to trial illegal miners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032631677 lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-04-at-15.56.02.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" data-eio-rwidth=\"800\" data-eio-rheight=\"450\" src-webp=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-04-at-15.56.02.jpeg.webp\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-04-at-15.56.02.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032631677\" data-eio=\"l\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This followed heightened public agitations for an end to illegal mining wreaking havoc in the country\u2019s lands, water bodies, vegetation and extractive sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Policy Consultant, Dr. Jamal Tonzua, says military interventions in the fight have been ineffective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He believes the solution requires a data-driven, evidence-based approach, not temporary military deployments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government is securitizing the Galamsey fight. There has been evidence of illegal miners being protected by men in uniform. It&#8217;s not helping. It is a short-term measure. That is not the silver bullet to solving the problem. What we need is a data-driven, and evidence-based solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032631675 lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-04-at-15.56.022.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" data-eio-rwidth=\"800\" data-eio-rheight=\"533\" src-webp=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-04-at-15.56.022.jpeg.webp\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-04-at-15.56.022.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032631675\" data-eio=\"l\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Tonzua was speaking at a skills training workshop on advocacy, negotiation, dialogue and conflict management and resolution by the Nature and Development Foundation (NDF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop aims to support participants from mineral extraction communities in identifying and planning advocacy actions in their various communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Tonzua says the destruction of lands by illegal mining activities is fueling resentment among affected communities, with the potential for violent retaliation, emphasizing the importance of the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Duty bearers have already failed to enforce lining laws properly. Now we have a crisis on our hands. There is a national security dimension to this problem. It&#8217;s the cause of violence and insecurity. People whose lands have been destroyed, won&#8217;t sit aloof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They may try to retaliate. The people feel neglected. This is why they need to emulate the negotiation and diplomacy skills. Which is the focal point of this training,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-day residential training was themed; \u201cBuilding Resilient and Active Communities in Extractive Landscapes in Ghana (BRACE)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants acknowledge the growing misconduct of illegal mining activities, fueling property disagreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Director of NDF, Mustapha Seidu said \u201cPeople are making money for what we say we don&#8217;t like.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This conflict will not be like the household fights, but something very threatening. So first is to be aware of what is coming and is at stake.
