Koforidua, Nov. 3, GNA \u2013 The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana (SOGOG) has unveiled an ambitious five-year strategic plan to improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights in the face of escalating Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The unveiling ceremony of the plan that spans 2024 to 2029, was part of the activities of SOGOG\u2019s Annual General and Scientific Meeting on the theme: \u201cPromoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in the context of rising Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in Ghana \u2013 A call for action.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
It focuses on improving access to quality obstetric and gynaecological care, enhancing the training of healthcare professionals, and implementing innovative practices that address the unique health challenges faced by women.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
It further aims to establish comprehensive support systems and educational programmes that empower young people to make informed decisions regarding their health.\u00a0<\/p>\n
During the event, key stakeholders emphasized the urgency of addressing the rising rates of HIV among adolescents in the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In her address, Mrs. Bawumia emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for young expectant mothers, urging healthcare providers to provide empathetic care and to foster open, honest communication.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHealthcare should be a safe space for all individuals, especially our young mothers who may feel vulnerable during such a transformative time in their lives,\u201d she stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Citing the World Health Organization\u2019s definition of adolescence as individuals aged 10 to 19, Mrs. Bawumia pointed out that these young people represent a significant portion of the population in Ghana.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
She voiced concern over the rising rates of new HIV infections, emphasizing that between January and June of 2020 alone, Ghana recorded more than 23,000 new cases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis trend is not just statistics; it is an alarming indication of danger for the future of our young people,\u201d she warned.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Second Lady reiterated the need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education to equip young people with the information they require to make informed choices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
By breaking down the barriers that hinder open discussions, she believes that healthcare providers can not only improve the quality of care for young mothers but also contribute to curbing the rising rates of HIV infections among adolescents.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mrs. Bawumia further asserted that promoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health was not just a health issue but a fundamental human right that demands collective responsibility from all sectors of society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must recognize that promoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health is a fundamental human right and requires a collective responsibility to ensure that every adolescent has access to accurate information, comprehensive education, and the necessary resources to make informed decisions that will positively impact their health and future,\u201d she stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Highlighting the need for tailored healthcare services, she urged that young people require youth-friendly healthcare options that are accessible, confidential, and free from stigma.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is imperative that we create an environment where young individuals feel safe to seek help and guidance without fear of judgment or discrimination,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Ali Samba, SOGOG, underscored the society\u2019s commitment to the total well-being of Ghanaian women, encompassing their sexual, reproductive, physical, and mental health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur mission is to ensure comprehensive care that addresses the multifaceted needs of women throughout their lives,\u201d he stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, Dr. Samba noted that SOGOG was dedicated to fostering partnerships across various sectors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSOGOG remains committed to fostering partnerships with the education sector, Non-Governmental Organizations, religious bodies, parents, and other departments to achieve our objectives in advancing women\u2019s health,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
This collaborative approach aims to create a network of support that strengthens the healthcare system and enhances services available to women and girls.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He commended OXFAM Ghana for the ongoing support in improving sexual and reproductive health services, as well as maternal and newborn care.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir efforts have been instrumental in many of our outreach initiatives, and we are grateful for their partnership in this critical area of healthcare,\u201d Dr. Samba added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
During the annual general meeting, SOGOG honoured several members who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to improving healthcare for women and girls.\u00a0<\/p>\n
