The McDan Group and the Ghana Port and Harbours Author\u00adity (GPHA) have signed a Memo\u00adrandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop national capabilities in marine transport and logistics.<\/p>\n The signing ceremony took place in Tema, in the Greater Ac\u00adcra Region, marking a significant step towards enhancing domestic maritime infrastructure.<\/p>\n Established in 1986, GPHA is responsible for the planning, development and regulation of ports in the country.<\/p>\n McDan Group, an indigenous conglomerate, operates in ship\u00adping, freight forwarding customs clearance, cargo and port han\u00addling, transportation and haulage, fixed-based operations, real estate, construction, civil engineering, agriculture, and salt mining, among others.<\/p>\n With the acquisition of a 30-year renewable lease for the Ghana Highway Authority\u2019s ferry maintenance and operations terminal site in Ada, McDan plans to develop the \u201cElectrochem Terminal, Port of Ada\u201d.<\/p>\n This project aims to streamline the management and export of bulk natural and processed salt, addressing the growing regional and global demand for salt.<\/p>\n The collaboration is expect\u00aded to improve Ghana\u2019s cargo services management capacity, reduce operational costs, and bolster socio-economic activities, particularly within the salt busi\u00adness cluster.<\/p>\n The planned ElectroChem Terminal will include essential fa\u00adcilities for bulk salt handling and processing, ultimately enhancing accessibility for export to interna\u00adtional markets.<\/p>\n The Executive Chairman of McDan Group, Dr Daniel McKorley, commented on the importance of the MoU, stating: \u201cThis agreement reinforces our commitment to developing Gha\u00adna\u2019s marine sector. By investing in infrastructure and human capital, we are not only improving logis\u00adtics but also contributing to the local economy.\u201d<\/p>\n The project would include fea\u00adsibility studies to assess technical, economic, and environmental viability, as well as the develop\u00adment of navigation channels and terminal facilities.<\/p>\n Key components will involve constructing quay walls, and storage facilities, and upgrading the road network connecting Ada to major highways, thus facilitating efficient transportation of salt products.<\/p>\n The MoU also establishes a joint project development team to oversee technical meetings, stakeholder engagement, and the execution of various service agreements.<\/p>\n Both parties would work closely to ensure the project\u2019s successful implementation, aiming for further agreements to enhance collaboration.<\/p>\n With ElectroChem holding the largest salt mining concession in Africa, currently producing 650,000 tonnes annually, and a production capacity exceeding two million tonnes annually, the development of the Ada port is poised to reduce Ghana\u2019s salt import dependency and enhance its export capabilities.<\/p>\n This initiative is expected to create jobs, strengthen local economies, and foster sustainable growth in the region.<\/p>\n As the project progresses, Mc\u00adDan Group aims to build a state-of-the-art facility that includes warehouses, maintenance docks, and residential amenities, contrib\u00aduting to the overall development of the Ada community.<\/p>\n Watch the latest edition of BizHeadlines below:<\/b><\/p>\n![\"Dr.](\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/582\/58264816.295.jpg\" "\\"Dr.")
