Videos of giant reptiles walking through the streets, chilling on house roofs, or swimming in canals with dead animals between their jaws have been doing the rounds on Indian social media ever since the Vishwamitri River overflowed last week. The river is home to hundreds of freshwater crocodiles, at least two dozen of which were caught in Vadodara between August 27 and 29.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-81958 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/gp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Vadodara-crocodiles-750x422.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\"\/><span id=\"more-81957\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo: X (Twitter)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe smallest crocodile we rescued was two feet long, while the largest was 14 feet long, which was caught on Thursday from Kamnath Nagar situated along the river. Local residents alerted us about this huge crocodile,\u201d Vadodara Range Forest Officer Karansinh Rajput <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/gujarat\/gujarat-rains-24-crocodiles-rescued-from-vadodaras-residential-areas-between-august-27-29\/article68592287.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cTwo other crocodiles, 11 feet long, were also rescued on Thursday from EME Circle and an open area near the Zoology Department of MS University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vishwamitri River stretches 17 kilometers through the Indian city and people living along the river\u2019s banks are used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odditycentral.com\/foods\/godzilla-ramen-has-a-crocodile-leg-sticking-out-of-the-bowl.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crocodiles<\/a> venturing into the streets during the monsoon season, but this year, an unusually large number of them had to be removed from residential areas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-81959 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/gp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Vadodara-crocodiles2-750x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"426\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo: X (Twitter)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Vadodara residents have been issuing warning for people to be on the lookout for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odditycentral.com\/travel\/this-italian-church-has-a-500-year-old-crocodile-hanging-from-the-ceiling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crocodiles<\/a> when they venture outside their homes, even though the giant reptiles are known to attack humans. There have however been sightings of crocodiles killing, dogs, cats, and even cattle and then swimming away with their bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVadodara is facing a double threat with both floods and crocodile sightings.
