{"id":190652,"date":"2024-06-19T06:06:46","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T06:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/06\/19\/governor-sakaja-tenants-to-pay-rent-directly-to-county-for-unpaid-land-rates\/"},"modified":"2024-06-19T06:06:46","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T06:06:46","slug":"governor-sakaja-tenants-to-pay-rent-directly-to-county-for-unpaid-land-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/06\/19\/governor-sakaja-tenants-to-pay-rent-directly-to-county-for-unpaid-land-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Sakaja: Tenants to Pay Rent Directly to County for Unpaid Land Rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314510\" alt=\"\" width=\"876\" height=\"420\"  data-lazy- src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/sakaja.jpg\"\/><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-314510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/sakaja.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"876\" height=\"420\"  \/>The Nairobi County government has begun recovering unpaid land rates.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Sakaja Johnson chaired a County Executive Committee (CEC) meeting on Tuesday, authorizing caveats on all debt properties to block any transactions, including subdivision, amalgamation, and transfer.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet decided that tenants of properties with pending land rates must pay rent directly to the county government until the outstanding rates are settled.<\/p>\n<p>The committee also approved auctioning properties that owe land rates to the county.<\/p>\n<p>Sakaja called for an efficient recovery process managed by internal lawyers to minimize legal fees.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe recovery process should be as efficient as possible and handled by county internal lawyers to avoid incurring huge legal fees, which are usually based on the land\u2019s value in dispute,\u201d<\/em> Sakaja stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Nairobi county boss further directed all CEC members and chief officers to provide vehicles and all necessary resources for revenue enhancement.<\/p>\n<p>This directive follows the expiration of a waiver period for penalties and interest on land rates, which was contingent on the payment of the principal amount.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sakaja praised the county revenue team for surpassing the previous revenue record.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col max-w-full\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] text-message flex flex-col items-start whitespace-pre-wrap break-words [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5 juice:w-full juice:items-end overflow-x-auto gap-2\" dir=\"auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"bc5d03ee-6de1-4cd6-822c-9c436fa16500\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 juice:empty:hidden juice:first:pt-[3px]\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert light\">\n<p><em>\u201cAs of today, Nairobi has raised Kes 3,255,969,569 in land rates against a target of Kes. 7 billion, with two weeks remaining in the financial year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTotal revenue stands at Kes 12,262,100,000, the highest ever collected by any county government since the advent of devolution. The previous record of Kes. 12.1 billion was set in the financial year 2015\/2016,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also instructed the environmental sector to start beautifying Langata Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMany people have sentimental feelings towards Langata Cemetery as almost everyone knows someone buried there.
