Antonio R\u00fcdiger said dealing with \u201csuper striker\u201d Erling Haaland in Real Madrid\u2019s Champions League quarterfinal with Manchester City is \u201cpersonal\u201d for him as a defender, as Madrid look for revenge for City eliminating them from last season\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n
R\u00fcdiger dealt well with Haaland in last year\u2019s semifinal first leg \u2014 which finished 1-1 at the Bernab\u00e9u, with Haaland failing to score \u2014 but didn\u2019t start the return leg in Manchester, which ended in a comfortable 4-0 win for City.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a good game last year at the Bernab\u00e9u,\u201d R\u00fcdiger said in a pre-match news conference ahead of Tuesday\u2019s match. \u201cWe all did a great job keeping Haaland quiet that evening. And my teammates did a good job keeping [Kevin] De Bruyne quiet.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis time, the plan will be to control dangerous players like Phil Foden, De Bruyne, and Haaland\u2026 It\u2019s personal for me as a defensive player, against a super striker like Haaland.\u201d<\/p>\n
Madrid and City meet this month for the fifth time in the Champions League in the last decade. The LaLiga giants came out on top in the 2016 semifinals, City progressed in the 2020 round of 16 and Madrid eliminated City after extra time in the 2022 semifinals, before last season\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe won\u2019t only sit back and watch City have possession,\u201d R\u00fcdiger said. \u201cBut that\u2019s part of the game. There will be phases where we have to defend more, and we\u2019re willing to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
R\u00fcdiger praised the impact in the Madrid dressing room of Jude Bellingham, who has scored four Champions League goals in six games this campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the beginning I was a bit surprised, I didn\u2019t know much about him,\u201d R\u00fcdiger said. \u201cBut wow, he\u2019s a big personality already in our locker room. The way he handles himself is very good. He\u2019s 20, but he\u2019s old for his age.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sure he\u2019ll be a leader for [England]. He\u2019s just professional, he\u2019s a good lad, we just have to hope and pray he\u2019ll stay healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his team had lacked \u201ccourage and personality\u201d in last season\u2019s second leg against City.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis tie [will be decided by] the players with most quality,\u201d Ancelotti said. \u201cThe players on the pitch decide games. You need a clear strategy that convinces the players. There are a lot of things in these games: individual quality, defending, counterattacks. It isn\u2019t one thing, it\u2019s all those aspects.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ancelotti said he wouldn\u2019t spring any surprises with his team selection, after picking midfielder Eduardo Camavinga at left-back against City last year.<\/p>\n
