Referee Michael Oliver declined to award a penalty and VAR Stuart Attwell did not intervene.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on\u00a0Sky Sports\u2019\u00a0<em>Match Officials Mic\u2019d Up<\/em>,Webbaccepted the controversy surrounding the decision but defended the VAR decision not to overturn the on-field ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one has split opinion,\u201d Webb began. \u201cI think it\u2019s one where had the referee given it on the field, it would have been \u2018check complete\u2019 by the VAR.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut having not given it, it is also \u2018check complete\u2019. You can hear Michael Oliver say that the ball is in between. The ball is too low to head\u2026 Doku lifts his foot to play the ball and he does make contact on the ball. We know there is some contact on Mac Allister as well so he\u2019s not really playing the ball either.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/01hsc8hzz0csjebztcrh.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Alexis Mac Allister, Jeremy Doku\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Mac Allister was left on the ground \/ Robbie Jay Barratt \u2013 AMA\/GettyImages<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI think it would have been \u2018check complete\u2019 either way as he doesn\u2019t want to be re-refereeing the game in situations that are not really clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this situation, the VAR stays out of it and I think that\u2019s what we would expect. It\u2019s a massive game, so as a referee, you just want clarity and certainty that you\u2019re making the right decision. You don\u2019t always have sufficient information that you\u2019re making the right decision. You need that on big moments in and around the penalty area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do everything you can to be in the right position. Michael didn\u2019t have certainty in this situation but VAR didn\u2019t have any clear and obvious evidence to overturn the on-field decision. It\u2019s subjective and so stays out of it. VAR followed the right course in not getting involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool\u00a0boss Jurgen Klopp argued Doku\u2019s challenge was \u201c100% a foul\u201d and insisted \u201call football people\u201d would agree, going as far as to question what Attwell had eaten for lunch in the build-up to the game.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/image-742-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-839484\"  \/><\/figure>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 1 --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PGMOL chief Howard Webb has defended the decision not to award Liverpool a late penalty in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
