Liverpool had to wait until the 118th minute to seal victory in Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Chelsea and their bid for a clean sweep of trophies continues on Wednesday.

The injury-hit Reds are hoping to add the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup to their haul in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club and they face Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round.

Saints’ main focus is on winning automatic promotion from the Championship and their top-two tilt has been hampered by a run of three defeats in four games.

Team news

Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch was injured in the first half of the EFL Cup final, joining Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic on the sidelines, while Wataru Endo is a doubt.

Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai will be assessed after missing Sunday’s Wembley win over Chelsea so there should be more opportunities for youngsters such as Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jayden Danns.

Southampton were missing the injured Flynn Downes, Juan Larios and Ross Stewart for their weekend defeat to Millwall. Winger Ryan Fraser, who came off in the 19th minute of that game, has also been ruled out.

The stats

Both teams have scored in Liverpool’s last eight home wins in all competitions.

There have been over 3.5 goals in seven of the Reds’ last nine matches.

Liverpool have reached the FA Cup quarter-finals only once in eight seasons under Jurgen Klopp.

Southampton’s Adam Armstrong has contributed 16 goals and 11 assists in 33 league starts this season.

Saints have lost and both teams have scored in three of their last four Championship matches.

Southampton have failed to score in only one of their 19 away games in all competitions this term.

"Sunday's
Sunday’s EFL Cup final matchwinner Virgil van Dijk comes up against former side Southampton next

Prediction

Virgil van Dijk’s header deep into extra-time powered Liverpool to the first trophy of the season on Sunday and they should avoid a slip-up against Southampton in the FA Cup tie at Anfield.

Klopp has a modest record in the competition, crashing out before the quarter-finals in seven of his previous eight seasons.

Star forwards Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez remain fitness doubts and Liverpool’s midfield options are limited so there could be more playing time for the youngsters who impressed in the EFL Cup final.

Southampton have hit a sticky patch in their promotion campaign and they may not be able to take advantage of Liverpool’s injury crisis and inexperience.

Saints have lost three of their last four in the Championship, having been unbeaten in 25 games in all competitions before that slump, although they are capable of getting on the scoresheet at Anfield.

They have found the net in all but one of their 19 away games in 2023-24 and Liverpool have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight home wins so a 3-1 victory for the Reds is worth backing.
