Virgil van Dijk hailed Liverpool’s young guns after leading an inexperienced Reds side to Carabao Cup glory over Chelsea.

The Dutchman’s header with less than three minutes of extra-time remaining settled a close contest, sealing a success that had looked improbable pre-match due to a cluster of key players missing out through injury.

The 32-year-old defender, captaining his club to silverware for first time, believes the performances of those stepping into the side proved pivotal.

Van Dijk told Sky Sports: “All the young boys on the pitch, in extra time. It’s incredible, I’m so proud of the team.

“It was an intense game for both sides, they had chances we had chances.
