But there is an argument to be made that Chelsea could do without qualification to the Europa Conference League at all.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Athletic<\/em>\u00a0report Chelsea are currently only liable to Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and these regulations have been much kinder on their recent finances than UEFA\u2019s club licensing and financial sustainability regulations (FSR).<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea\u2019s summer 2023\u00a0transfer\u00a0spend is amortised at \u00a359.4m a season under PSR as Premier League clubs only recently voted to cap player amortisation at five years. Many of the Blues\u2019 summer signings put pen to paper on contracts ranging from six to eight years in length.<\/p>\n<p>However, if\u00a0Chelsea\u00a0had to comply with UEFA and FSR, then they would have to factor that summer transfer spend to \u00a380.9m under their five-year amortisation rules. The example put forward by\u00a0<em>The Athletic<\/em>\u00a0is Moises Caicedo\u2019s \u00a3100m move from Brighton, which is amortised at \u00a312.5m annually under PSR but would be at \u00a320m a year in FSR calculations.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/01hq8dtst34dqempj76d.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Nicolas Jackson\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Caicedo and Jackson signed long-term contracts last summer \/ James Baylis \u2013 AMA\/GettyImages<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p>The Premier League permits clubs can make losses of up to \u00a3105m across a three-season span, whereas UEFA only allow losses of up to \u00a368.5m over a two-year period. Chelsea are just about within PSR calculations but it will be tougher for them to come in line with FSR.<\/p>\n<p>This could see Chelsea rush to sell players and make further profit through player trading prior to June 30 \u2013 the end of the latest financial monitoring period.<\/p>\n<p>An extra wrinkle to Chelsea\u2019s problems is many members of their first-team squad are expected to receive wage rises and bonuses dependant on qualification to European competition. However, the finances that come with playing in the Europa Conference League pale in comparison to UEFA\u2019s two other club competitions \u2013 West Ham United received \u00a316m for winning last season\u2019s tournament, while Chelsea earned \u00a382m just from reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.<\/p>\n<p>As such, football finance guru\u00a0Kieran Maguire\u00a0put forward the argument that Chelsea may be better off agreeing to a one-year ban from European competition. It may not be worth the Blues playing in a competition that is not lucrative while also subjecting themselves to further financial scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>A similar case arose with AC Milan earlier this decade. The Rossoneri agreed to a one-year expulsion having found to have been in breach of UEFA\u2019s old Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, missing out on a season of Europa League football but thriving in their campaigns since.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-1394-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-828584\"  \/><\/figure>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 1 --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chelsea will secure European qualification on Sunday if they beat Liverpool in the final of the Carabao Cup, but they could yet be banned from UEFA competitions next season.
