Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has firmly stated his position on LGBTQ issues and the proposed legislation regarding human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill.<\/p>\n
Addressing the issue during a breakfast meeting with the Clergy in Koforidua on Wednesday, January 31, Mr Mahama stated that his faith is against same-sex marriages, emphasizing the natural order of creation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe faith I have is against a man marrying a man and a woman marrying a woman,\u201d Mr Mahama said, adding \u201cI don\u2019t believe that a man can wake up and say he feels like a woman so he wants to change his sex to a woman, I don\u2019t think that is right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mahama also voiced his concerns about the Electoral Commission\u2019s proposal to move the voting date from December to November.<\/p>\n
In Mahama\u2019s view, the new proposals have the potential to raise doubts about the integrity of the elections.<\/p>\n
The Electoral Commission has suggested moving the voting date from December 7 to November 7 and has also indicated its intention not to use indelible ink for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n
According to Mr. Mahama, the proposed changes could lead to chaos if not executed effectively, questioning why the EC waited until a mere eight months before the polls to propose such significant reforms.<\/p>\n
He emphasized the need for transparency and careful consideration in implementing any reforms to maintain the credibility of the electoral process.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter every election, we sit and consider electoral reforms and we agree on what to do. Since 2020, we have only 9 months to another election and the EC has now come with major changes. No indelible ink and different reforms. When you do that it doesn\u2019t build the confidence of the people in the electoral process.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have returned to IPAC after the Peace Council intervened and now they [EC] are saying they want to change the Election date and that they want to bring a new CI to change the old CI but our concern is why wait till now? You don\u2019t spring surprises on people, what if it doesn\u2019t work and it leads to some disturbances\u2026so that is our position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
