{"id":141012,"date":"2024-01-19T12:06:42","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T12:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/19\/sheikh-jassim-lays-down-gauntlet-to-man-utd-over-takeover-funds-claim\/"},"modified":"2024-01-19T12:06:42","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T12:06:42","slug":"sheikh-jassim-lays-down-gauntlet-to-man-utd-over-takeover-funds-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/19\/sheikh-jassim-lays-down-gauntlet-to-man-utd-over-takeover-funds-claim\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheikh Jassim lays down gauntlet to Man Utd over takeover funds claim \u2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The team behind Sheikh Jassim\u2018s unsuccessful bid to buy Manchester United have challenged the club\u2019s claims that they never provided proof of funds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sir Jim Ratcliffe ultimately won the takeover race and United, who are awaiting final completion of the deal, have now revealed the details of the negotiations in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).<\/p>\n<p>Among the statements are claims that Sheikh Jassim, who was pursuing a 100% takeover of United, never actually provided proof of his funds despite being asked to do so on a number of occasions which, if true, would have made it impossible for United to choose his offer.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a statement released via\u00a0<em>Ben Jacobs<\/em>, a source close to the bid has rejected such claims and has demanded corrections be made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe filing \u2013 which is made by MU Plc unilaterally without consulting or having to verify with other parties \u2013 refrains from disclosing the most basic and irrefutable facts, both about the financial guarantees given and the level of offers made, all of which are fully documented,\u201d the statement read. \u201cEnquiries are being made with the SEC as to a corrective statement of fact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also curious to note the widespread media reporting of the inflated level of the other competing bid at the time, and how that stacks up to reality today.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/01hme5hn2w0m9m7aqrg7.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Sir Jim Ratcliffe\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Ratcliffe won the takeover race \/ Eric Alonso\/GettyImages<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p>United\u2018s filing also claims Sheikh Jassim rejected advice to amend his offers following guidance from the board before ultimately walking away from the process in October, having failed to prove he could actually finance a takeover.<\/p>\n<p>SEC guidelines state that any party found to have knowingly submitted false information \u201cmay be subject to criminal sanctions under federal law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ratcliffe is awaiting the final completion of his takeover bid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve met Erik [ten Hag] but it would be inappropriate, really [to speak to players], until it\u2019s all formalised which should be early to mid-February, we hope,\u201d Ratcliffe revealed to reporters earlier this week. \u201cWe hope they don\u2019t find anything dodgy in our CV!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 1 --><\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The team behind Sheikh Jassim\u2018s unsuccessful bid to buy Manchester United have challenged the club\u2019s claims that they never provided proof of funds.
