{"id":140538,"date":"2024-01-18T12:20:31","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T12:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/18\/benzema-files-defamation-suit-against-minister\/"},"modified":"2024-01-18T12:20:31","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T12:20:31","slug":"benzema-files-defamation-suit-against-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/18\/benzema-files-defamation-suit-against-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Benzema Files Defamation Suit Against Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Gerald Darmanin and Karim Benzema\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>French football star, Karim Benzema, has filed a defamation lawsuit against France\u2019s interior minister for accusing him of having links with the Muslim Brotherhood, local media reports.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e9rald Darmanin said in October that Mr Benzema \u201chas a notorious link\u201d with the Sunni Muslim Islamist group.<\/p>\n<p>The comment \u201cundermines\u201d his honour and reputation, Mr Benzema\u2019s lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>The Muslim Brotherhood is banned in several countries, including Egypt, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Darmanin\u2019s comment in October came after the player tweeted his support for the people of Gaza as \u201cvictims again of unjust bombardments which spare neither women nor children\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Noting his failure to express similar sympathy for the estimated 1,300 Israeli victims that Hamas killed on 7 October, Mr Darmanin said the former French striker was \u201cwell-known for his links with the Muslim Brotherhood\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are fighting the hydra that is the Muslim Brotherhood, because it creates an atmosphere of jihadism,\u201d the politician told conservative TV channel CNews.<\/p>\n<p>Karim Benzema, 36, who plays in Saudi Arabia and is a Muslim, quickly issued a denial and threatened legal action against the minister for slander.<\/p>\n<p>In his 92-page complaint, reported widely in French media on Tuesday, he says he \u201chas never had the slightest link with the Muslim Brotherhood organisation, nor to (his) knowledge with anyone who claims to be a member of it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The former Real Madrid star added: \u201cI am aware of the extent to which, because of my notoriety, I am being used in political games, which are all the more scandalous given that the dramatic events since October 7 deserve something quite different from this type of statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer Hugues Vigier told French outlet RTL that the footballer is the victim of \u201cpolitical exploitation\u201d and accused the interior minister of \u201csowing division in France\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Darmanin is yet to comment on the complaint.<\/p>\n<p><!-- AI CONTENT END 2 -->\n\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gerald Darmanin and Karim Benzema\u00a0 \u00a0 French football star, Karim Benzema, has filed a defamation lawsuit against France\u2019s interior minister for accusing him of having links with the Muslim Brotherhood, local media reports.
