{"id":140497,"date":"2024-01-18T11:07:07","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T11:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/18\/well-continue-to-subsidise-electricity-to-ease-hardship-on-nigerians-fg\/"},"modified":"2024-01-18T11:07:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T11:07:07","slug":"well-continue-to-subsidise-electricity-to-ease-hardship-on-nigerians-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/18\/well-continue-to-subsidise-electricity-to-ease-hardship-on-nigerians-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ll Continue To Subsidise Electricity To Ease Hardship On Nigerians \u2014 FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-788050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/breaking-nerc-finally-suspends-electricity-tariff-hike.jpg\" alt=\"FG Increases Electricity Tariff By 50%\" width=\"735\" height=\"375\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sanusi Garba, says the Federal Government will continue to subsidise electricity to ease the financial burden on citizens amid the economic challenges in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Garba who made this known during a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said: Government has decided for now, arising from the cost of living crisis and so many others, to in the meantime continue to subsidise electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the new tariff order just published by the commission, you will discover that tariff is not going up but you will see what the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) should be charging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will also see in the tariff order the amount of subsidy the government will be providing to cover the gap between what they will charge and what they are allowed to charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the new tariff includes what DisCos are permitted to charge under government policy if they are to remain in service.<\/p>\n<p>Garba said NERC inserted various provisions in the tariff to guarantee that DisCos pay what they are required to pay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DisCos are in the business of buying electricity from the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET), so they are to pay,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO: \u2018Update Your Prepaid Meter Before November 2024 Or You May Be Unable To Recharge\u2019 \u2013 NERC Urges Users<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, according to the NERC Chairman, allows states to create laws and manage electricity in their franchise areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission, he said, is committed to working with the states to ensure that existing public utilities are nurtured to offer services to Nigerians and are used for their intended purposes.<\/p>\n<p>On metering, Garba said NERC had identified DisCos face challenges with financing to meter their customers.<\/p>\n<p>Garba furthered that the inability of DisCos to raise the requisite capital from banks has a negative influence on metering rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo reduce the rate of estimated billing, the commission created a framework under which the distribution companies can raise some amount of money to meter customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we decided that from the market revenues, we set aside a fixed amount that is dedicated for the provision of metering<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not saying that the money from the market on a monthly basis is the money to buy a meter,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>He said the fund serves as a potential lender, providing a channel for DisCos to repay any loans obtained to provide metres.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div data-advadstrackid=\"890536\" data-advadstrackbid=\"1\" class=\"infor-target\" id=\"infor-408609387\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/300x250b.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sanusi Garba, says the Federal Government will continue to subsidise electricity to ease the financial burden on citizens amid the economic challenges in the country.
