{"id":138081,"date":"2024-01-12T05:00:41","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T05:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/12\/npps-evans-nimako-shoots-down-afari-gyans-proposal-against-election-petitions\/"},"modified":"2024-01-12T05:00:41","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T05:00:41","slug":"npps-evans-nimako-shoots-down-afari-gyans-proposal-against-election-petitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/01\/12\/npps-evans-nimako-shoots-down-afari-gyans-proposal-against-election-petitions\/","title":{"rendered":"NPP&#8217;s Evans Nimako shoots down Afari-Gyan&#8217;s proposal against election petitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                        \n\n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Director of Elections for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako has expressed his disagreement with some assertions made by the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a Constitution Day Public Lecture on Monday, Dr Afari-Gyan pointed out that there was a disturbing trend of election losers alleging manipulation and refusing to accept results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, he suggested, could be a result of the failure to instill democratic principles widely across society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Afari-Gyan thus suggested the imposition of sanctions for election petitions that do not succeed in court to prevent their proliferation and ensure they are not used merely to satisfy financiers and supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026To prevent the rush to court with improbable election petitions from becoming a fashion, I suggest that election petitions that do not succeed should attract punitive sanctions,\u201dhe proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reacting to this statement on <strong>JoyNews\u2019 PM Express<\/strong>, Mr Nimako said considering such a proposal would constitute \u2018gagging\u2019 of political parties and candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the window of election petitions has been provided to ensure that candidates who have grievances get their &#8220;justice&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that the court has its way of awarding damages to people who have come before it,\u201d he told host Aisha Ibrahim on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the same show, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Tamakloe also disagreed with Dr Afari-Gyan\u2019s comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that only two out of eight elections held since the inception of the Fourth Republic have been addressed at the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A feat, he believed, ought to be applauded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMay we not take the peace we have in this country for granted.
