In a detailed post on X, Mills expressed alarm at the early indications of sycophancy, noting that some people and organizations are overly flattering Mahama and his family to gain favor.
He pointed out the public suggestion that Mahama’s son, Sharaf Mahama, be appointed Minister of Sports, highlighting Sharaf’s interest in boxing.
Mills remarked that while the Mahama-led NDC government is not new to Ghanaian politics, having been in power from 2013 to 2017, the current atmosphere raises concerns.
He noted that it seems individuals are eager to please the incoming president and his family, citing the calls for Sharaf to assume a ministerial role as a prominent example.
In her response, Bawah Mogtari characterized the calls for Sharaf’s appointment as expressions of excitement rather than sycophancy.
She emphasized that such statements should not be taken seriously, suggesting they stem from enthusiasm rather than genuine political maneuvering.
Mogtari elaborated that the remarks from certain youth close to Sharaf Mahama reflect their excitement about the new administration.
She expressed confidence in Sharaf’s capabilities, asserting that he, like other young people, is capable of serving the nation at various levels.
She reaffirmed President-elect Mahama’s dedication to his duties and the goal of revitalizing the country, urging that trivial matters should not distract from the important work ahead.
Mogtari concluded by highlighting Mahama’s focus on governance rather than sycophantic behavior.
Additionally, she addressed concerns raised by Mills regarding proposed constitutional amendments, clarifying that discussions about presidential term limits are unrelated to Mahama’s presidency.
