The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced provisional results for school applicants who took the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to a statement made by the Council on Monday, December 30, 2024, 4,108 candidates had their subject results canceled, while 781 candidates’ results were withheld.
483 students had their complete results revoked for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall, while 209 had their entire results withheld for other alleged offenses.
The exam management authority has made the results available for participants to see on its official website.
Further examination of the data demonstrates a drop in performance in three main subjects—English Language, Integrated Science, and Social Studies—compared to the previous year.
However, there was no reduction in Core Mathematics.
The subject results of applicants from 319 schools have been withheld because to allegations of collusion.
“These cases are currently being investigated. The withheld results of these candidates may be revealed or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations,” the statement continued.
The alleged malpractices include introducing foreign material into the examination hall, such as prepared notes, printed material, and mobile phones, cooperation among candidates, and organized cheating with the knowledge of some supervisors and school administrators.
