The year 2024 was full of of activities. There were a lot of trending issues.Here are some of them:
Napo To Be Named NPP Running Mate
The ruling New Patriotic Party named member of parliament for Manhyia South, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate ahead of the December 7th elections. NAPO, as he is popularly called was named running mate by Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections as part his Ashanti regional tour. This news didn’t come as a surprise to many people as he was one of the top people who were being considered for this role.
Akua Donkor is Dead
Akua was a popular political figure in Ghana. She was the first woman without a formal education to run for president in the country. Her death shook the whole country because nobody expected that at such a time when she was preparing for the presidential election. Akua Donkor was a strong woman and brought a lot of excitement in Ghanaian politics.
NDC Embarks on Nationwide Protest
The leading opposition party, the National Democratic Congress embarked on a nationwide protest on the 17th of September, 2024. This demonstration was a call for the Electoral Commission to audit the electoral register.
NPP MPs Call for the removal of Ofori-Atta
This is the first time members of parliament were calling for the head of their own finance minister in the country. This issue generated a lot of buzz. The MPs numbering about 90 were assured by the president that the finance will go after he has finished with an IMF program. The minister was removed and was given another role.
Speaker Declares 4 Seats Vacant
The speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin declared 4 seats vacant. The affected MPs were Cynthia Morrison of the New Patriotic Party (Agona West); Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah of the National Democratic Congress (Amenfi Central); Kwadwo Asante of the NPP (Suhum), and Fomena MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, an independent MP. These MPs were going independent or contesting on the tickets of a party other than the one that brought them to parliament. This decision was later on stayed by the Supreme Court.
Akufo-Addo Unveils His Own Statue
The president of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo unveiled his own statue at Kwesimintim in the Western region. This generated a lot of uproar. The statue was later removed, part of it was also broken. It was later restored .
Black Stars Fail to Qualify for 2025 AFCON
The senior national football team, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the upcoming AFCON. Ghana has been a powerhouse in football on the African continent and the shambolic performance in Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches generated a lot of conversation.
DDEP: Pensioners Protest Against Government
A number of pensioners were on the street to protest the government after they were affected by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). This situation made them unable to access their funds.
Mahama Retains Naana Opoku Agyemang
Naana Opoku Agyemang was retained as the running mate of the largest opposition party in the 2024 having served as the running mate in the 2020 elections. She became the first woman to become the vice president-elect.
Mahama wins Election 2024 with over 6m votes
Former President John Dramani Mahama was declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, securing a remarkable return to the nation’s highest office after a fierce contest. The announcement, made by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, confirmed Mahama’s victory with 6,328,397 votes cast representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%. The results were declared without 9 constituencies and there are indications that former president Mahama won with 57.7% against vice president Bawumia who secured 38.2%.
