According to a report by MyJoyOnline, Dr. Bawumia, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded the presidential race to NDC candidate John Dramani Mahama. He stated that his decision was made to prevent escalating tensions in the country, despite resistance from his campaign team.
“I chose to concede to maintain the peace and stability of our nation,” Dr. Bawumia remarked during a post-election interview.
Contrarily, Dr. Omane Boamah contends that the concession should have been made earlier, given the data available on election night. In a Facebook post dated Friday, December 27, he detailed his critique of Dr. Bawumia’s timeline.
“By election night, the NDC had collated over 37,000 polling station results, showing Dr. Bawumia trailing at 41.21%. The outcome was evident; there was no justification for the delay in conceding,” he asserted.
Dr. Omane Boamah further attributed the delay to inefficiencies within the NPP’s collation system. He argued that if the NPP’s system had been as effective as the NDC’s, Dr. Bawumia could have conceded on election night.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia actually delayed!” he stated unequivocally, adding that the concession could have been expedited under better circumstances.
This exchange has sparked discussions among political analysts and the public about the significance of timely concessions in electoral processes. Dr. Esther Osei, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, noted, “Conceding defeat promptly is crucial in maintaining public trust in the democratic process. Delays can lead to unnecessary tensions and speculation.”
Supporters of Dr. Bawumia defend his timing, emphasizing the importance of thorough verification before making such a critical announcement. NPP campaign member Dennis Miracles Aboagye stated, “The concession was Dr. Bawumia’s sole decision! He acted as a responsible statesman.”
