A man between the ages of 50 and 55, identifying himself as a long-time ranking member and campaigner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has passionately voiced his frustrations on a radio program. His concerns come in the wake of the party’s recent electoral defeat, which he attributes to the neglect and exploitation of grassroots supporters by the party’s leadership.
The man, whose loyalty to the NPP spans decades, did not hold back. Sharing a deeply personal experience, he said, “I have been and worked for the NPP all my life. My son graduated from the University and he was looking for a job, but surprisingly, when I went to see them to give my son a job, they told me to pay GH¢20,000 before he can be employed. These were the same people I have worked for all my life.”
His comments painted a troubling picture of the internal workings of the party, citing allegations of widespread favoritism and bribery in securing jobs and appointments. According to him, “People had to pay money for ministerial appointments. To get jobs at the airport, harbor, in the military, police, and immigration, you had to pay money. People, including NPP members, were paying from GH¢15,000 to GH¢30,000 as bribes before getting employment.”
The long-time supporter lamented how grassroots members, whose tireless efforts propelled the NPP to power, were sidelined and exploited. He questioned the sincerity of the party’s leadership, asking, “These were the same people their parents worked very hard to bring to power. Look at the jobs some of us have done for the NPP—they have no idea. So, I shouldn’t have struggled to get a job for my son when my party is in power.”
The man’s emotional account has sparked widespread conversation among Ghanaians. Many listeners who heard his interview agreed with his sentiments, suggesting that the NPP’s defeat was a direct result of the leadership’s failure to address the needs of its grassroots supporters.
“The NPP forgot about their grassroots members, and that’s the main reason why they lost the election,” remarked one listener.
As the NPP reflects on its loss, stories like this underscore the need for the party to reconnect with its base and address the grievances of its loyal supporters.
