Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Flagbearer for the 2024 elections, has explained why he decided to concede defeat before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.
According to MyNewsGH on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, in a recent interview, Bawumia outlined that the opposition had been circulating claims of electoral rigging by the governing party.
With his team’s data indicating a loss, Bawumia felt the need to act swiftly to prevent tensions from escalating.
He emphasized that the key to preserving peace in the country outweighed all other concerns. “Ghana needs peace,” he remarked, explaining that his decision to concede was aimed at maintaining calm and safeguarding the country’s stability.
According to him, any delay in acknowledging the outcome could have led to violence, as supporters might have believed the NPP was attempting to manipulate the results.
Despite his team’s hesitation, Bawumia was resolute in his choice. “If you wait, you’ll build up more tension,” he explained.
The potential for unrest, he stated, could have undermined investor confidence in the nation, further compounding challenges to its development.
Bawumia’s decision to concede, he believes, was crucial not only for maintaining peace but also for ensuring that Ghana remains an attractive destination for investment and international cooperation.
While others in his camp argued that no candidate had conceded without the Electoral Commission’s official declaration, Bawumia stood firm, revealing, “There is a first time for everything.”
