The Member of Parliament-elect for Afram Plains North, Worlase Kpeli, has announced plans to consult his constituents before deciding whether to align with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 9th Parliament. This decision follows a period of contention during which Kpeli was suspended by the NDC and successfully ran as an independent candidate in the Afram Plains North parliamentary race.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, December 23, Kpeli highlighted the importance of prioritizing the views and interests of his constituents in determining his parliamentary alignment. With the inauguration of the new Parliament set for January 7, 2025, Kpeli stressed that such a decision must be made with careful consideration and input from those he represents.
“There are a lot of things that go into this decision and consultations,” Kpeli explained. “There are decisions that one must go through to determine who to do business with, and I will have to consult my people before.”
Kpeli’s suspension from the NDC in July 2024 stemmed from allegations of misconduct—a decision he challenged but ultimately respected by running independently. Despite this, Kpeli remains committed to serving Afram Plains North and advancing the development agenda of his constituency. His victory as an independent candidate reflects the support of his constituents despite the NDC’s stance.
Additionally, Kpeli raised questions about his legal and procedural status within the NDC, arguing that the party’s constitution does not explicitly prevent members from running as independent candidates. “Looking through the NDC’s constitution, there is no express clause that goes against me going independent,” he stated. “It is just by convention that we all say it, but expressly, I don’t see any binding clause that forfeits my membership in the National Democratic Congress.”
As Kpeli navigates this complex political landscape, his emphasis on consultation and legal clarity underscores his commitment to balancing the interests of his constituents with broader political considerations.
