‘NDC Agent Absence Won’t Stop Election Results’

Dr. Benjamin Bannor Bio, the Director of Electoral Services at Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), has reaffirmed that the absence of a party agent, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will not disrupt the election declaration process. Speaking during a briefing, Dr. Bannor Bio underscored the importance of adhering to the electoral rules and procedures established to ensure the credibility and transparency of Ghana’s democratic process.

According to Dr. Bannor Bio, the electoral process is designed to be robust and impartial, relying on rules that prioritize the overall integrity of the election rather than the presence or actions of individual party representatives. “The process does not grind to a halt because a party agent is absent. The election declaration is based on verified results, and all grievances should be channeled through appropriate mechanisms,” he stated.

The Director of Electoral Services emphasized that the role of party agents is to observe and ensure fairness, not to obstruct the process. He highlighted that any misconduct or attempts to disrupt the process by agents would not be tolerated. Such matters should be reported to the Presiding Officer for immediate resolution to maintain order at polling stations.

This announcement comes amidst heightened scrutiny of the EC’s operations ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections. Concerns have been raised by various stakeholders, including political parties and civil society groups, about the need for a fair and transparent electoral process. The EC has responded by inviting journalists and observers to monitor key stages of the election, such as ballot printing and collation, to promote accountability.

Dr. Bannor Bio’s statement reinforces the EC’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that no political party or individual undermines the electoral process. The Commission has assured the public that all complaints or disputes will be addressed through lawful channels, ensuring that the final results reflect the will of the people.
