KT Hammond Demands Retraction and Apology from Captain Smart Over False Tribal Comment

Kobina Tahir Hammond, Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has demanded an immediate retraction and apology from broadcaster Captain Smart over allegedly defamatory comments made about him as reported by Ghana Web on Friday, December 20, 2024.

In a letter dated December 16, 2024, addressed to Media General GH Ltd, Hammond’s legal representative, Kweku Y. Paintsil, referred to a viral video circulating on social media.

The video reportedly shows Hammond in an agitated state outside his home, with Captain Smart’s commentary suggesting that the MP made tribalistic remarks.

The letter specifically highlights Smart’s accusation that Hammond expressed frustration over an “Ewe person” contesting him for a parliamentary seat in the Ashanti Region.

Hammond’s legal team strongly disputes the claim, asserting that the allegations are “false and defamatory,” causing considerable harm to the MP’s reputation.

“Our client requires from you a full and unequivocal public retraction and apology,” Paintsil wrote, demanding that the apology be issued in a manner that is acceptable to Hammond.

The letter also stated that Hammond seeks compensation for the reputational damage caused by the false statements, as well as legal fees incurred in addressing the matter.

If a satisfactory response is not received by December 18, 2024, Hammond’s legal team has instructed to take further legal action, including issuing a writ.

The MP’s representatives made it clear that they expect a swift resolution to this issue, emphasizing that the allegations have caused significant distress and embarrassment.
