EC Declares Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North Election Results Illegal

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has nullified the parliamentary election results for the Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central constituencies in the Greater Accra Region. This announcement was made by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy EC Chair for Operations, during a press briefing in Accra on Friday, December 13, 2024.

According to the modernghana,(ec) collation processes in these constituencies violated the provisions of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, which governs electoral procedures in Ghana. Tettey highlighted that disruptions caused by party supporters compromised the integrity of the results. Party loyalists besieged collation centers, coerced electoral officers, and forced the declaration of results in favor of their preferred candidates.

The EC emphasized that proper collation and declaration processes were not followed, rendering the results illegal. Despite police presence at collation centers, the necessary procedures were ignored, undermining the credibility of the results.

In contrast, the EC successfully re-collated results for Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North constituencies, but similar efforts are still pending in other areas, including Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, and Techiman South.

The EC’s decision underscores the importance of adhering to electoral procedures to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process. Tettey affirmed that any results not collated and declared according to the prescribed procedures would not be upheld.

This development has significant implications for parliamentary representation in the affected constituencies. The EC is expected to outline the next steps to ensure a lawful resolution of the situation. Stakeholders, including political parties and their supporters, are urged to respect electoral laws and work with the EC to uphold democratic principles.

The commission’s commitment to enforcing electoral laws is critical in maintaining public trust in Ghana’s electoral system. This action serves as a reminder of the importance of following due process to preserve the sanctity of elections and ensure that results accurately reflect the will of the people.
