“Over 80% of Police Officers Rejected NPP Over Dampare’s ‘Bias’ – ACP Agordzo

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo has criticized the leadership of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, describing him as the “worst IGP” Ghana has ever seen.

According to Ghana Web on Thursday, December 12, 2024, Agordzo’s comments, made in an interview with TV3 on December 11, 2024, point to several controversial actions by Dampare, particularly his handling of police promotions and transfers, as reasons why many officers voted against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7 elections.

Agordzo accused the IGP of promoting officers without due process, citing the absence of a promotion board in these decisions.

He also criticized Dampare for making biased and “vindictive” transfers, claiming that some officers were moved based on personal relationships rather than professional considerations.

“I will always say that this is the worst IGP that we have ever seen in this country,” Agordzo said, noting how Dampare’s actions have made the NPP government unpopular among police personnel.

The retired police officer claimed that these actions had led to widespread disillusionment within the police force. “Over 80% of police officers voted against the NPP because of Dampare,” he stated, emphasizing the frustration officers felt under the current leadership.

Agordzo further added that many police officers were now taking legal action against the IGP, with some suing over issues related to unfair promotions. “It’s unprecedented for police officers to be suing their IGP over promotions,” he remarked.

Agordzo also highlighted the issue of favoritism within the service, accusing Dampare of promoting officers he favored, while sidelining others.

He mentioned a specific case where a young officer, initially an ASP, was rapidly promoted under Dampare’s leadership, eventually reaching the rank of Chief Superintendent within just two years.

“If Dampare remains in office, that guy will be an Assistant Commissioner,” Agordzo predicted, pointing out the dissatisfaction this has caused among senior officers who are now required to salute juniors who have been promoted above them.
