“I Was a Target Through My Advocacy” – Appiah-Kubi on His Electoral Defeat

Andy Appiah-Kubi, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has acknowledged his defeat in the 2024 general elections, attributing the loss to his outspoken stance on national issues as reported by Citinewsroom on Monday, December 9, 2024.

The former legislator lost his seat to Independent Candidate Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who secured 26,926 votes, far surpassing Appiah-Kubi’s 8,933 votes.

In an interview on Citi FM, Appiah-Kubi noted that his advocacy, particularly on matters of economic governance, had likely made him a target.

“In Asante Akim, I lost the seat. People voted and they voted against my candidature; they had a preference and voted for somebody else,” he stated.

The former MP had been a strong critic of the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, calling for his dismissal over concerns about economic mismanagement and conflicts of interest.

Despite the electoral setback, Appiah-Kubi maintained that he stood by his actions. “I was a target through my advocacy, and I don’t regret doing that. If I ever fall victim to my advocacy, at least I’m still alive and have a fallback position.”

On his political journey, he announced his intention to leave politics permanently, choosing instead to focus on his legal profession. “This is the end of my political career. I will not seek a return to politics,” he confirmed.

Appiah-Kubi also called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the election results to understand the widespread losses in parliamentary seats.
