Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has broken ranks with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, NAPO declared his withdrawal of support for the NPP and openly endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
“I have served this party faithfully for many years, but today, I must put Ghana first,” NAPO began, addressing a crowd of journalists and party supporters.
“The NPP has lost its way. It no longer prioritizes the needs of the ordinary Ghanaian.
Our economy is in shambles, and the promises we made remain unfulfilled. I cannot continue to stand by and watch.”
NAPO criticized the leadership of Dr. Bawumia and President Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing them of focusing on political power rather than solving the country’s pressing issues.
He cited rising inflation, unemployment, and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi as signs of the government’s failure.
“Ghanaians deserve better. They deserve a leader who understands their struggles and works to alleviate them.
That leader is John Mahama,” NAPO declared. “He has a proven track record of building infrastructure, creating jobs, and listening to the concerns of the people.”
This announcement has sparked debates within the political landscape, with some NPP members calling NAPO’s move a betrayal.
However, NAPO stood firm, stating that his decision was driven by his conscience and love for Ghana.
“Politics is not about blind loyalty,” he said. “It’s about service to the nation.
I am urging all Ghanaians, regardless of their political affiliation, to give John Mahama a chance to rebuild our country. We cannot afford another term of hardship.”
In response, the NDC welcomed NAPO’s endorsement, with party spokesperson Sammy Gyamfi describing it as a “game-changer” in the 2024 elections.
