Two people have been injured after Gomoa Central Independent Parliamentary Candidate Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, allegedly pulled a gun at the Gomoa Lome festival launch.
The victims are receiving treatment at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.
Angry chiefs of Gomoa Lome told Adom News that A Plus and his bodyguards assaulted some residents, while tasers were used on others.
The Traditional Authorities say they invited all Parliamentary Candidates in Gomoa Central, including the NDC’s Kwame Dean Yawson, Kwame A Plus, and the NPP’s Naana Eyiah Quansah, who also serves as the Deputy Interior Minister, for a fundraising event.
The proceeds were to be invested in the construction of nurses’ quarters for health workers in Gomoa Lome.
According to the chiefs, each candidate was given a specific time to avoid confusion and chaos, but A Plus did not adhere to his assigned time.
For reasons unknown, he decided to show up at the same time as Naana Eyiah, the incumbent MP.
Addressing a press conference at Gomoa Lome, a member of the Planning Committee, Frank Okyere, stated that immediately after A Plus arrived at the durbar grounds, his supporters began hurling insults at the MP for failing to construct the road in the area.
Amidst the tension, A Plus allegedly pulled out a pistol and attempted to fire shots, while his bodyguards wielded cutlasses and began assaulting some residents.
Following the incident, Mr. Okyere has called on the IGP to beef up security in Gomoa Central for the upcoming election.
In his view, there are clear signals that some people intend to cause mayhem.
The Abusupanin of Gomoa Lome, Nana Kojo Duodu, who spoke on behalf of the Chief of Gomoa Lome, called on A Plus to come and apologize for suggesting that the chiefs are not interested in development but are only focused on rice and oil.
Nana Duodu added that A Plus appears to want to create chaos in Gomoa in the upcoming general election and has called on security agencies to be on high alert.
However, a member of A Plus’ campaign team, David Siripi, has denied the allegations leveled against their candidate.
