Mariam Ofori Twumasi, a prominent agribusiness leader has challenged traditional gender roles, calling for women to pursue economic empowerment.
Speaking in Accra on November 2, 2024, after being awarded the title African Agribusiness Woman of the Year at the Women in Agribusiness Awards 2024, she stated “A woman’s place is no longer only the kitchen, this isn’t to say we don’t go to the kitchen at all, but there’s a call for women to empower ourselves economically.
“We are in an era where women are thriving economically.”
Twumasi shared her journey, describing how she transitioned from part-time farming to full-time agribusiness in 2014, a decision that ultimately allowed her to tap into the full business potential of agriculture.
“When I was doing it part-time, I was getting part-time results. But once I went into it full-time, I saw the true business side of agriculture,” she added.
The 2024 Women in Agribusiness Awards, organized by Guzakuza, brought together influential women from across Africa who are reshaping the continent’s agricultural landscape.
This year’s theme, “Connecting Women: Connecting African Food Systems,” highlighted the crucial role women play in creating sustainable and inclusive food systems.
In her opening address, Akosua Duah, Programme Coordinator for the Women in Agribusiness Week (WAW), applauded the honourees for their contributions.
