We’ve Picked Credible Intel” on Efforts to Block GFP Replacement for Akua Donkor

Mr. Richard Jakpa, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) agent supervisor, has voiced concerns over potential consequences if the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) fails to nominate a new presidential candidate to replace the late Akua Donkor, as required by the Electoral Commission (EC) as reported by Ghana Web on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

Donkor, the GFP’s flagbearer, passed away, prompting the EC to demand a substitute within ten days to maintain the electoral process.

Speaking with Joy News, Jakpa claimed that his party, the NDC, had “credible Intel” suggesting efforts by opponents to prevent the GFP from fielding a replacement candidate.

“We’ve picked credible Intel from our opponent doing whatever they can behind the scenes for GFP not to present a replacement for the late Akua Donkor to the EC,” Jakpa stated.

He argued that the absence of a replacement would disrupt the election’s arrangements and affect other political candidates.

Jakpa further explained that a failure by the GFP to present a substitute could potentially lead to the party’s removal from the ballot, which would have repercussions for the electoral positioning of other candidates.

He stated, “The NDC and other parties have invested heavily in campaigning based on the assigned ballot numbers. It would be unfair if the GFP’s absence forces the EC to alter these positions.”

The EC has paused the printing of presidential ballots, which were nearly complete before news of Donkor’s death.
