Ghanaians are yet to move on from the heartbreak they got from the senior male national team, the Black Stars, who are now officially eliminated from the 2023 AFCON tournament.
The Black Stars failed to win a single game at the tournament, losing their first game against group leaders Cameroon and a disappointing draw against both Egypt and Mozambique despite taking the lead twice in the respective games.
The decisive moment that sends the Black Stars packing comes in extra time when Richard Oror makes a costly mistake in their game against Mozambique, a game they were leading 2-0 up until the 90th minute.
With Ghana struggling to contain the last-minute pressure of the Mozambiquens, a ball was heading toward a goal kick, which would have eased some of the pressure on them. The goalkeeper, however, touched the ball that was almost dead to concede a Conner kick.
It was that corner kick that sealed the comeback draw for Mozambique and sent Ghana packing. That particular moment of the game has led everyone to the conclusion that Richard Ofori was the reason Ghana drew the game.
However, one Facebook user did not entirely agree with what the masses were saying and tried to prove a point in his post that Richard Ofori alone shouldn’t be blamed.
According to him, Defender, Daniel Amartey may have played a huge role in Richard Ofori’s decision to touch the ball that led to the decisive corner kick.
The Facebook user, with the username Stephen Zando, argued that Ofori wasn’t sure whether the ball had touched any Ghanaian player or not so he attempted to catch it until Daniel Amartey asked him not to.
According to him, the moment Daniel Amartey asked Ofori not to touch the ball, the goalkeeper was left confused about catching it or leaving it, and he couldn’t take his final decision earlier, leading to the error.
“I think Daniel Amartey may have confused Richard Ofori. The ball had hit a Ghanaian player already going out for a corner. Ofori wasn’t sure so he wanted to catch the ball hence the attempt, but Amartey clearly told him to leave it. Split second decision and he let it go after making the attempt to catch it. Alot can happen in football within seconds..” he wrote.
