Ghana suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cape Verde in their opening game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
The Island nation inflicted defeat on the Black Stars at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, with goals from Jamiro Monteiro and Garry Rodrigues doing the damage, while Alexander Djiku’s strike only served as a consolation.
Mohammed Kudus and Inaki Williams were both left on the bench, as Chris Hughton made some tough calls in his starting line-up.
Richard Ofori got the nod between the sticks, with Denis Odoi, Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Salisu and Gideon Mensah forming the back four.
Reacting to the unexpected defeat, controversial Shatta Wale has slammed the Blackstars for their lackadaisical performance.
Firing the team in a self-made video, infuriated Shatta Wale told the GFA to rename the team to ‘Black Soil’ because it’s evdient the team is no longer useful because Ghana has now won only one of the last 10 AFCON games.
As insisted by Shatt, the team would be kicked out of the ongoing AFCON tournament and wouldn’t provide significant results, unlike their prior performances in the tournament.
“How can a star be black? Name the team Black Soil so they can at least produce something because black soils are the best”, he stated.

AFCON 2023: Ghanaian man attacks Chris Houghton after Blackstars’ defeat to Cape Verde
Following Blackstars’ disappointing loss to Cape Verde yesterday, an angry Ghanaian took matters into his own hands and decided to physically assault Chris Hughton.
The 2-1 loss has not only fueled criticism of the team’s performance but also escalated into an alarming incident that marred the aftermath of the match.
According to ace Ghanaian sports journalist Sadiq Adams, a fan who was dissatisfied with manager Chris Hughton’s tactics and the team’s lacklustre performance, resorted to physical aggression against the coach.
The fan has been arrested and is currently in the grip of the Ivorian police force.
