Yayra Koku, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised the outgoing administration for denying President-elect John Dramani Mahama his end-of-service benefits after they took over the country in 2017.
He was reacting to a video in which John Dramani Mahama denied speculation about some amount of money paid into his account as his benefits as a Former President of the country.
In the video that Yayra Koku shared on his verified Facebook page, Mahama was emphatic that no amount of money was paid into his account as widely reported, expressing his readiness to provide his bank details to prove his case. Mahama urged the general public to disregard the assertion, describing them as baseless, pointing out that the only money he received was his salary arrears.
Mahama challenged government communicators making such claims to come forward with evidence to substantiate their claims. Commenting on the heels of the comments made by Mahama in the video, Yayra Koku mentioned that Dr Mahamadu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are now regretting their actions of not giving the Former President his end-of-service benefits.
He advised those holding key political positions to be mindful of their actions, warning that they may come back to harm them in the future.
“Bawumia denied HE John Mahama his benefits as former President. Today, they are saying their actions are regrettable.
Political power is transient, do public good while it lasts'” he posted. The issue of ex-gratia has always generated massive discussions in the political landscape.
