Top 10 Biggest Political Moments in Ghana in 2024

2024 has been a year of political moments. Being an election year, there were a lot of political activities that happened prior to the general elections. Here are some of the events that happened in the political season.

Mahama wins Election 2024 with over 6m votes

Former President John Dramani Mahama was declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, securing a remarkable return to the nation’s highest office after a fierce contest. The announcement, made by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, confirmed Mahama’s victory with 6,328,397 votes cast representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia , who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%. The results were declared without 9 constituencies and there are indications that president Mahama won with 57.7% against vice president Bawumia who secured 38.2%. The results from this election is unprecedented.

Alleged list of Mahama’s ministers surfaces

Immediately former president Mahama won the elections, there were rumours of an alleged list that was circulating on social media. Some notable names in the National Democratic Congress had been mentioned on this list that they have been pencilled for ministerial portfolios. Some of these people included Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Nathan Kofi Boakye, Haruna Iddrisu, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, among others. This was later denied by the party.

Video: Young man arrested in possession of 76 ballot papers

In a video that was posted by Onua FM, the young man was spotted in handcuffs for allegedly possessing 76 ballot papers. The 2024 election had high expectations and the stakes were high. It was the first time a former president was contesting a sitting vice president. In all, there were 12 presidential hopefuls who were seeking the mandate of Ghanaians. The young man was handed over to the police after being arrested for this unlawful act.

2024 Polls: Winners And Losers

The 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections produced some shocking results that many people never expected. The incumbent party’s flagbearer for the presidential elections conceded defeat less than 12 hours after the polls closed. Some notable members of parliament, especially from the ruling party, lost their seats. What was more surprising was the number of seats the opposition party won and the percentage margin that the opposition party won the elections.

Special Voting: Security officer under fire for voting Bawumia and sharing photos

Before the general elections, a special voting exercise is organised for some people who normally play some active roles in the general elections. Some of these groups of people include the media practitioners, security personnel, election officials. During this special voting, a security officer shared photos of his ballot and was condemned by several social media users. It is illegal to take pictures of ballot papers and share them on social media after voting.

Napo To Be Named NPP Running Mate

The ruling New Patriotic Party named member of parliament for Manhyia South, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate ahead of the December 7th elections. NAPO, as he is popularly called was named running mate by Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections as part his Ashanti regional tour. This news didn’t come as a surprise to many people as he was one of the top people who were being considered for this role.

List of NPP Bigwigs Who Lost Their Seats in Parliament

The results of the 2024 elections saw several NPP bigwigs losing their seats. It is not clear why this huge number of these MPs lost their seats. Some of these top MPs are Ursula Owusu, Hawa Koomson, Lydia Alhassan, KT Hammond, Henry Quartey, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Ambrose Derry. The list continues

Comic actor Agya Koo was humiliated and scorned after he attempted to spread NPP propaganda during a funeral he attended. Agya was seen losing his cool after the crowd challenged his political assertions during the funeral event. According to reports, Agya Koo while speaking about his beloved NPP party was shut down by a crowd who started chanting John Mahama’s name. Some people called even called him a liar and asked him to stop spreading false news

Akufo-Addo’s driver Buried After a Deadly accident

The driver of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who died in an accident at Bunso, Kwesi Atta, popularly known as Champion Atta, was laid to rest at Gomoa Kweikrom in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region. Adom News reported that the driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser died on the spot, while three other occupants of the vehicle sustained varying degrees of injury after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was returning from the funeral of the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah.

List of seats won by the NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won an overwhelming number of seats in the December 7, 2024 polls. This includes seats that they have never won before since 1996. As at the time of writing this article, they had over 180 out of 276 seats with some of the other seats under contention. This gives the opposition party an overwhelming majority in parliament. Some of the seats they’ve won include Ayawaso West Wuogon, Ahanta West, Assin Central, Dormaa West, Dormaa East, Sekondi.
