Kofi Bentil Slams ‘Loot Recovery’ Initiative, Calls It a ‘Cycle Where Recoverers Become Looters’

Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has expressed skepticism over the effectiveness of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama’s Operation Recover-All-Lot initiative, aimed at recovering stolen public funds as reported by Ghana Web on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

Bentil believes that the program will fall short, pointing to the inefficiency of similar efforts in Ghana’s history.

In a post shared on social media, Bentil described the process of loot recovery in Ghana as a recurring cycle where those in power accuse the previous administration of corruption, only for the situation to repeat itself.

“It’s a cycle where the recoverers become the looters and the looters become the recoverers,” Bentil said, stressing that citizens are the ultimate losers in this ongoing process.

He cited the case of Alfred Woyome, whose controversial dealings with the government have resurfaced within NDC politics, as an example of how both major political parties— the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP)—take advantage of the public.

Bentil called for a closer examination of both parties to end the political “musical chairs” that perpetuates corruption.

Bentil’s comments were in response to Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar, who argued that loot recovery is vital for the country’s development.

Azar emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in governance, stating that such efforts help rebuild public trust and promote a fairer society. “Loot recovery is an essential pillar of our developmental agenda,” he wrote.
