Speaker Alban Bagbin Angry Over Disturbing Video of Immigration Officers Assaulting a Woman

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for a comprehensive investigation into an incident at the Aflao border in the Ketu South Municipality, where immigration officers were allegedly involved in the assault of a woman. The disturbing event, which was captured on video, has sparked public outrage and was brought to the attention of Parliament by Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for the area.

The video, which quickly went viral, shows several immigration officers, some armed with firearms, physically attacking an unarmed woman. The graphic nature of the footage has raised serious concerns about the conduct of public servants, especially those enforcing immigration laws. In response, Speaker Bagbin strongly condemned the officers’ actions and demanded swift action.

“This behavior is entirely unacceptable and unbecoming of public servants,” Bagbin stated during a parliamentary session. He directed the Interior Minister to provide a detailed report on the incident to Parliament by July 29, 2024. The Speaker emphasized that public servants, including immigration officers, are entrusted with upholding the law and serving the people of Ghana, not engaging in violent behavior.

Bagbin further clarified that the use of force falls outside the responsibilities of public servants. While military personnel may be authorized to use force when necessary, public servants must adhere to a different standard, he explained. “The role of public servants is to serve without resorting to any form of violence, as that is neither lawful nor consistent with the principles of public service,” Bagbin stated.

The Speaker also expressed particular concern that the victim of the assault was a woman. He pointed out that the attack was especially troubling due to the disregard for the victim’s dignity. “What makes this even worse is that the victim was a woman. Such actions are unacceptable and contradict our societal values,” Bagbin remarked.

Bagbin’s firm stance on accountability reflects the need for justice and transparency in handling the case. He urged for a prompt investigation and called for the findings to be made public. The Speaker’s remarks serve as a reminder that public servants must maintain the highest standards of conduct and be held accountable for any actions that undermine public trust.

The incident has captured national attention, with widespread condemnation from citizens. As the investigation progresses, the public is closely monitoring how authorities will address the matter. Speaker Bagbin’s commitment to justice highlights the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring accountability within public institutions.

This case brings attention to ongoing concerns about the behavior of security personnel and public servants, emphasizing the need for those in positions of power to respect the rights and dignity of all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
