Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North in the Ashanti Region, has announced his decision to align with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the forthcoming 9th Parliament as reported by Ghana Web on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
Representing the constituency as an independent candidate, he believes this alignment will better serve the developmental needs of his constituents.
Kwame Frimpong achieved a resounding victory in the constituency, securing 26,926 votes.
This triumph unseated the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who garnered only 8,933 votes. Meanwhile, the NDC candidate, Kofi Asamoah, received 2,469 votes, further highlighting Frimpong’s dominance in the race.
This decision by Frimpong to caucus with the NDC comes at a time when the party is set to lead the Majority Caucus in Parliament. With recent updates to parliamentary seat counts, the NDC has secured 181 out of the 276 seats, giving them a clear majority.
The NPP follows with 89 seats, while independent candidates, including Frimpong, hold four. The Electoral Commission has yet to declare results for two constituencies.
The move by Frimpong is expected to bolster the NDC’s position in Parliament.
His alignment also emphasizes the growing importance of independent candidates in shaping the dynamics of Ghana’s legislature.
Frimpong’s victory, along with his decision to join forces with the NDC, reflects a shift in voter preferences and priorities within the Asante Akyem North Constituency.
With development being the focal point of his campaign, Frimpong’s decision aligns with his commitment to bringing tangible progress to his constituency.
