Ghanaians will pay a heavy price if Mahama removes the Chief Justice – Adei

Professor Stephen Adei, the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), has urged the incoming Mahama administration to refrain from removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo without a valid reason. He emphasized that such an action would have severe consequences for Ghanaians, undermining the stability of the judicial system .

Adei expressed concerns that removing the Chief Justice would set a dangerous precedent, allowing future presidents to remove justices without due process. He stressed that the removal of a Chief Justice should only occur through impeachment, following established procedures .

Furthermore, Adei cautioned against removing the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa, stating that this would be disastrous for Ghana’s future. He argued that the practice of each president appointing a new EC Chair undermines the integrity of the institution and the country’s democratic processes .

Adei’s warnings highlight the importance of maintaining the independence and stability of Ghana’s institutions, ensuring that they remain impartial and effective in serving the nation.
