Baba Sadiq Breaks Silence After EC Overturns His Earlier Victory After Re-collation

Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Okaikwei Central Constituency, has broken silence after the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has declared Patrick Yaw Boamah as the Member of Parliament-elect for the area, overturning his earlier victory.

In a significant development, a re-collation exercise by the elections management body has nullified the earlier declaration that announced Baba Sadiq as the winner of the contest. Initially, Baba Sadiq was declared the winner, securing 15,383 against the incumbent, Patrick Yaw Boamah, who received 14,949 votes.

However, following the re-collation, the Commission has reversed its decision. Patrick Yaw Boamah has been declared as the MP-elect. Per the declaration, Boamah amassed 21,099 votes to retain his seat in Parliament, beating his sole challenger , Abdulla Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq of the NDC, who got 19,368 votes.

Reacting to this, the NDC parliamentary candidate for the area described the re-collation as fraudulent. Speaking in a video shared by Accra-based Citi FM, Baba Sadiq mentioned that the numbers on their pink sheets which were given to them by the EC, have different figures from what the Commission used for the re-collation.

Despite challenging the numbers, the Electoral Commission continued the process unabated. He added that there were several instances where the NPP could not provide pink sheets for some constituencies.

He accused the Electoral Commission of conniving with the NPP to deprive him of his win. He was however silent on his next line action.

Background

The re-collation and declaration of results for nine disputed constituencies began following a court directive. The affected constituencies include Nsawam-Adoagyiri (Eastern Region), Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, and Obuasi East (Ashanti Region), Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central (Greater Accra Region), as well as Techiman South (Bono East Region).

The Accra High Court instructed the EC to complete the process and declare winners in accordance with electoral laws. Additionally, the court directed the Inspector-General of Police to ensure adequate security at the collation centres.

The exercise, which is ongoing at the EC’s Greater Accra Regional Office, is being conducted under tight police and military security.
