Security expert, Professor Kwesi Aning, has commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for their decision to suspend the re-collation of parliamentary results in nine constituencies, citing the need to address procedural flaws and safeguard its staff amid heightened tensions as reported by Citinewsroom on Friday, December 20, 2024.
The EC’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, reaffirmed on Thursday, December 19, that the results for constituencies such as Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North would not be upheld due to challenges encountered during the re-collation process.
This decision also affects Techiman South, Suhum, Akwatia, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, and Tema Central.
The re-collation exercise was initially introduced to rectify discrepancies identified during the first collation.
However, interference by political party agents caused significant disruptions, leading to their suspension.
The EC criticized these actions, emphasizing that they obstructed the finalization of the results.
Commenting on the development, Prof. Aning described the suspension as a necessary measure to prevent further conflict and ensure credibility in the electoral process.
“Stopping the process entirely is the appropriate step. This is because the available information suggests that tensions are still high,” he said
He further acknowledged the efforts of security forces in curbing isolated incidents of unrest but expressed concerns about the EC’s criticism of election security arrangements.
The EC’s decision has sparked discussions about the balance between political participation and procedural compliance, as stakeholders emphasize the importance of maintaining trust in Ghana’s electoral process.
