According to 3news, a sombre mood engulfed Accra on Monday after a dedicated nurse lost her life in a road accident during a high-speed police chase involving a phone snatcher.
Witnesses say the chase, which occurred on a busy city road, spiraled into chaos and ended in tragedy.
According to reports, the incident began when a young man allegedly snatched a phone from a woman in the city center.
Police officers, responding quickly, pursued the suspect at high speed. The chase caused panic as the suspect recklessly wove through heavy traffic, with police in hot pursuit.
Unfortunately, the nurse, driving in the opposite direction, found herself caught in the middle of the unfolding drama.
Eyewitnesses described her efforts to avoid the speeding vehicles, but in the process, she lost control of her car. The collision that followed was severe.
“I was right here when it happened,” a bystander said. “She tried to swerve, but the speed of the cars made it impossible.”
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the impact of the crash left the nurse fatally injured. Despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The nurse, described as a kind and hardworking healthcare professional, worked at a local hospital and was well-loved by colleagues and patients alike. Her sudden death has devastated her family and colleagues.
“She had such a bright future ahead of her,” a tearful colleague shared. “Why did this have to happen? This chase wasn’t worth her life.”
Meanwhile, police officers managed to apprehend the suspect, who sustained injuries during the chase. He was taken into custody for questioning regarding the robbery and the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The incident has sparked an outcry from residents, who are questioning the use of high-speed chases in busy areas. Many are calling for alternative methods of handling such situations to ensure public safety.
“This is not the first time something like this has happened,” a concerned resident said. “We need better policing strategies. Innocent lives shouldn’t be lost like this.”
